Misoprostol only

Misoprostol-only abortion

How Misoprostol can be used on its own, how effective it is, and what to expect.

The most effective medical abortion uses Mifepristone followed by Misoprostol. Where Mifepristone is not available, Misoprostol can be used on its own, and the World Health Organization recognises this as a safe option, with slightly lower effectiveness.

How it is used

A Misoprostol-only abortion uses repeated doses of Misoprostol, taken a few hours apart, rather than a single dose. The exact amount and timing should always be guided by a provider, which is why we review every case before sending medication and stay with you throughout.

How effective is it?

Used correctly in early pregnancy, Misoprostol alone is highly effective, though a little less so than the Mifepristone and Misoprostol combination. If the first round does not work, a further dose may be needed.

What to expect

As with the combination, expect cramping and bleeding heavier than a period, often with clots, as the pregnancy passes, followed by lighter bleeding for one to two weeks. The same warning signs apply: very heavy bleeding, severe pain, or fever means you should seek care.
