How it works

How does the abortion pill work?

A clear, simple explanation of how Mifepristone and Misoprostol end an early pregnancy safely at home.

A medical abortion uses two medicines, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, to safely end a pregnancy of up to 12 weeks. Together they are over 95% effective when used correctly, and they work much like an early, natural miscarriage.

The first pill: Mifepristone

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone a pregnancy needs to keep growing. Without it, the pregnancy stops developing and the lining of the womb begins to break down. Most people feel little or nothing in the hours after taking it.

The second medicine: Misoprostol

Taken 24 to 48 hours later, Misoprostol makes the womb cramp and contract and softens the cervix, so the pregnancy is gently expelled. Cramping and bleeding usually begin within 1 to 4 hours, and the heaviest bleeding, often with clots, passes over a few hours.

What to expect

Bleeding heavier than a normal period, with cramping, is expected and shows the medicine is working. Lighter bleeding then continues for one to two weeks. Our team guides you through every step and checks in afterwards.

How effective is it?

Used correctly up to 12 weeks, the Mifepristone and Misoprostol combination is over 95% effective. It is a World Health Organization essential medicine and very safe when properly guided.
