Bleeding is a normal and expected part of a medical abortion, it is how the pregnancy passes. Knowing what is normal helps you feel calmer and recognise the rare signs that need attention.
What is normal
After Misoprostol, bleeding is usually heavier than a period for a few hours, often with clots and strong cramps. This is the pregnancy passing. The heavy bleeding then eases, and lighter bleeding or spotting can continue on and off for one to two weeks, sometimes up to four.
How to manage it
Use sanitary pads (not tampons) so you can monitor the flow, rest, stay hydrated, and use a hot water bottle and pain relief such as ibuprofen for cramps. Our team checks in the next day and is on WhatsApp if you have questions.
Warning signs, get medical help
Seek care at your nearest hospital if you have: very heavy bleeding that soaks two or more pads an hour for two hours in a row; severe pain not eased by medication; a fever or feeling very unwell; or foul-smelling discharge. These are uncommon but should never be ignored.
When the bleeding settles
Your next period usually returns in four to six weeks. If you had little or no bleeding after Misoprostol, contact us, as the medicine may need to be repeated.
