Abortion for under-18s in SA

Your rights under the CTOP Act, consent, and how to get safe, confidential care if you are under 18.

If you are under 18 and pregnant, you may be worried about whether you are allowed to have an abortion and whether your parents must be involved. South African law is clear and on your side.

You can consent yourself

Under the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act (1996), a person of any age can consent to an abortion themselves. You do not need your parents' or guardian's permission, and no one can force you either way. The decision is yours.

Counselling is offered, not required

The law encourages a girl under 18 to be advised to consult with her parents, family or a trusted adult, but this is advised, not compulsory. Care cannot be refused because you choose not to involve them.

Your privacy is protected

Your information is confidential. With Lola Women's Clinic there is no clinic to walk into and no register to sign, the consultation happens privately on WhatsApp and your medication arrives in plain, unmarked packaging.

Getting safe care

Medical abortion with Mifepristone and Misoprostol is safe and suitable up to 12 weeks. A licensed provider reviews your case first, and we will tell you honestly if a clinic referral is safer for you. You are not alone, and you will not be judged.
